About Laughter Coaching
7 questions

Laughter coaching is a professionally facilitated, science-backed intervention that uses intentional laughter exercises and nervous-system regulation techniques to produce measurable physiological change. It is not stand-up comedy. It is not laughter yoga. It is not therapy.

Where laughter yoga uses clapping, breathing, and childlike playfulness derived from yogic traditions, laughter coaching is grounded in psychoneuroimmunology — the science of how the brain, nervous system, and immune system talk to each other. Sessions begin with a neurological baseline (our Frazzle Meter), move through facilitated exercises calibrated to the group's state, and end with a documented shift.

The result: a 31.9% average cortisol reduction (PLOS One, 2017) that feels human and looks like evidence on a board report.

This is one of the most common misconceptions — and it is completely wrong. Laughter coaching is designed to be inclusive of introverts, sceptics, and reluctant participants.

The sessions begin gently, build psychological safety progressively, and never require anyone to perform, joke, or be funny. In Shareen's 15+ years of practice, the most powerful transformations have often happened for the quietest people in the room. The nervous system does not care about personality type — it responds to the stimulus.

The foundational study is a 2017 peer-reviewed paper in PLOS One documenting a 31.9% average reduction in salivary cortisol following a single facilitated laughter session. Cortisol is the primary stress hormone — its reduction is the most direct physiological marker of a nervous-system reset.

Supporting science includes:

  • Endorphin release from genuine and simulated laughter (Dunbar et al., Oxford, 2012)
  • Increased natural killer cell activity and IgA secretion (immune response)
  • Improved pain tolerance linked to social laughter (Dunbar, 2012)
  • Reduction in serum cortisol and epinephrine in mirthful laughter studies (Berk et al.)
  • Improved mood states and psychological wellbeing in corporate settings

Shareen's methodology — The Felt Shift™ — layers this science into a structured session with anonymous before-and-after measurement, so results are not anecdotal. They are documented.

Laughter yoga was founded by Dr Madan Kataria in 1995 — and Shareen has the deepest respect for the tradition. In fact, it was Dr Kataria himself who named Shareen the "Laughter Professor" in recognition of her work.

The differences are meaningful:

  • Laughter yoga blends breathing exercises with playful, childlike laughter activities in a group setting. It is wellness-oriented and accessible to anyone.
  • Laughter coaching is professionally facilitated, neurologically calibrated, and includes a measurement framework. It is designed for corporate contexts, leadership development, and wellbeing programmes that require accountability and reporting.

Think of it this way: laughter yoga is a warm morning practice; laughter coaching is a clinical intervention with boardroom-ready outcomes.

Both — and that is entirely the point. The brain cannot distinguish between voluntary and involuntary laughter when it comes to neurochemical response. The body receives the same physiological benefit whether the laughter was spontaneous or initiated intentionally.

That said, in Shareen's sessions, genuine laughter almost always breaks through naturally. The methodology creates enough psychological safety and social contagion that most participants find themselves laughing for real within minutes — regardless of how sceptical they walked in.

No-one is put on the spot. No-one is required to be funny. No-one is made to feel foolish. The awkwardness, when it comes, is gently used — because awkward laughter is still laughter, and still works.

Absolutely — and this is where laughter coaching has a distinct advantage over humour-based approaches. Laughter coaching does not rely on jokes, and therefore sidesteps the cultural, linguistic, and generational pitfalls that derail many team wellbeing sessions.

Shareen has worked with teams across South Africa's full spectrum — from mining and manufacturing floor teams to boardroom executives, across Zulu, Sotho, Xhosa, Afrikaans, and English-speaking groups. The nervous system's response to intentional laughter is universal. The facilitation is adapted to honour the room, never to make assumptions about it.

The title was bestowed by Dr Madan Kataria, the Indian physician who founded the global Laughter Yoga movement in 1995. Dr Kataria coined the title "Laughter Professor" in recognition of Shareen's depth of expertise, her original research application, and her role in professionalising laughter-based interventions in the Southern African corporate context.

It is not a self-assigned marketing label — it is a peer-conferred designation from the movement's founder, and one Shareen holds with great pride and responsibility.

Conference Energiser (from R18,500) is a high-energy 45–60 minute session designed to inject momentum into a conference, summit, or large event. It works as an icebreaker, a post-lunch pick-me-up, or a closing activation. It includes Frazzle Meter check-in and collective reset — but the reporting is lighter.

Team Reset (from R38,500) is a deeper, half-day engagement for teams of up to 30 people. It includes a full before-and-after Felt Shift™ assessment, anonymous board-ready reporting, and a facilitated debrief. It is appropriate for teams in or recovering from high-stress periods, restructures, or culture-change programmes.

Both include Shareen's personal facilitation and access to The Felt Shift Method framework. The Keynote (from R28,500) sits between the two — a 90-minute keynote address woven through with live laughter coaching.

Both. On-site delivery is available across Johannesburg and Gauteng, and for special engagements across South Africa. Shareen travels to your venue, conference centre, or office — all you need is a clear floor space and a PA system for larger groups.

Alternatively, hosting at HappiSpace in Sandton is a genuinely different experience. The Cloud Room, Hammocks space, and Balcony each create a physical environment that primes the nervous system before the session begins. Venue hire for corporate sessions can be bundled with the facilitation package.

For virtual and hybrid sessions, see the question below.

HappiSpace works with teams of 8 to 500+. The methodology scales.

  • Small teams (8–20): Intimate, deeply transformative. Ideal for leadership teams, management offsite, or high-performance units under pressure.
  • Mid-size (20–80): The sweet spot for Team Reset and Wellness Day formats.
  • Large (80–500+): Conference Energiser and Keynote formats, often on the main stage of company summits and EXCO conferences.

For very large groups, additional facilitators may be co-deployed. Contact us to discuss your specific configuration.

The board-ready report is the output of The Felt Shift™ methodology — and it is the thing that sets HappiSpace apart from every other corporate wellness offering in South Africa.

It includes:

  • Anonymous pre-session Frazzle Meter baseline (self-reported stress, energy, focus, and safety indices)
  • Anonymous post-session Frazzle Meter measurement
  • Aggregate before/after comparison by metric (not individual — fully POPIA compliant)
  • A plain-language executive summary suitable for HR, ESG, or EXCO reporting
  • Science citation for ROI and compliance context

The report is not fabricated wellness theatre. It is a genuine data artefact. Your CFO, auditor, and transformation team can read it without translation.

For a Conference Energiser or Keynote, as little as a week's notice is sometimes possible, depending on Shareen's availability. We always recommend booking at least three to four weeks ahead.

For Team Reset, Wellness Day, or the 4-Week Leadership Programme, we recommend four to six weeks of lead time to allow for needs assessment, session design, and logistical coordination.

For annual conference slots and peak season dates (Q4, year-end functions), booking six months ahead is common. Popular dates go fast. Make an enquiry now to secure your date.

Yes. Virtual sessions are available via Zoom or Teams for distributed, hybrid, or remote teams. The methodology is adapted for the medium — the Frazzle Meter is delivered digitally, and the facilitation is calibrated for camera fatigue and screen proximity.

That said, in-person delivery consistently produces stronger measurable outcomes. The social contagion of laughter — the literal neurological transfer that happens when people laugh together in a shared space — is reduced in a virtual environment. We are honest about this.

Virtual sessions are priced separately. Enquire for pricing.

Mr Frazzle
5 questions

Mr Frazzle is the HappiSpace character — sweet-but-grumpy, endlessly relatable, and the unofficial mascot of every overworked human being who has ever told themselves they're fine.

He hosts the HappiSpace podcast, fronts the Burnout Calculator (the Frazzle Meter), and has a way of making even the most sceptical HR director smile. Mr Frazzle is not a cartoon gimmick — he is a communication vehicle for making the science of stress legible, approachable, and just the right amount of funny.

He was created by Shareen as a way to give the concept of burnout a face — and then give that face a way out.

The mohawk is a visual indicator of Mr Frazzle's nervous-system state — and the most intuitive burnout scale you've ever seen.

Rainbow mohawk = calm, regulated, grounded. Mr Frazzle is still a bit grumpy (he's always a bit grumpy), but his nervous system is at ease. He is post-Felt Shift.

Red mohawk = frazzled. Cortisol up, patience down, one inbox-zero away from a meltdown. We have all been there. Mr Frazzle is just honest about it.

The colour metaphor makes the invisible visible — which is exactly what The Felt Shift™ does in the data.

The Frazzle Meter is the HappiSpace burnout self-assessment tool, inspired by and named after Mr Frazzle. It is a quick, validated psychometric pulse-check that measures stress load, energy levels, focus quality, and psychological safety across a short set of intuitive questions.

It is used in two ways:

  • As a standalone digital tool individuals can use to check their burnout score at any time (try the scorecard)
  • As the before-and-after measurement instrument in Felt Shift™ corporate sessions — generating the anonymous aggregate data for the board-ready report

Yes — in a manner of speaking. Mr Frazzle features in pre-session content, on-screen activations, and digital materials that can be incorporated into your event. He can appear as a branded pre-show video, a measurement companion in the Frazzle Meter, or as part of the session introduction.

A fully costumed Mr Frazzle character appearance at live events is available for specific activations — speak to Shareen about what is appropriate for your event format and audience.

WhatsApp +27 82 337 3777 to discuss custom activations.

Mr Frazzle stars in the HappiSpace podcast — a show about burnout, nervous systems, laughter, and the surprisingly funny science of how to be a functional human being at work.

Episodes feature Mr Frazzle navigating real workplace scenarios, with Shareen's expert commentary woven in. Find the podcast on all major podcast platforms, and on the HappiSpace podcast page.

Mr Frazzle content also lives on the HappiSpace social media channels — follow along for regular frazzled-to-calm moments.

Booking
4 questions

The easiest starting point is requesting a proposal — it takes two minutes and gives Shareen the context she needs to send you something specific, rather than a generic brochure.

Three ways to start:

Tell us your date, group size, and what you are trying to achieve — we will take it from there.

As a rule of thumb:

  • Conference Energiser / Keynote: 2–4 weeks minimum; 4–6 weeks preferred
  • Team Reset / Wellness Day: 4–6 weeks minimum
  • 4-Week Programme: 6–8 weeks minimum (design and needs assessment required)
  • Year-end functions / Q4 dates: book by August at the latest — popular dates fill early

For urgent bookings, WhatsApp us directly — we will always try to accommodate where we can.

Our standard cancellation terms:

  • More than 14 days before the session: full deposit refund (less a 10% admin fee) or free date change
  • 8–14 days before: 50% of the deposit is forfeited; the balance may be applied to a rescheduled date
  • 7 days or fewer: the full deposit is forfeited. Where possible, we will try to accommodate a reschedule at no additional charge
  • Date changes (with adequate notice) are accommodated free of charge once per booking

These terms are outlined in full in the service agreement. We are human about it — if something genuinely beyond your control happens, speak to us.

Yes. A 50% deposit is required to confirm and secure your booking date. The balance is invoiced and due 5 business days prior to your session.

For large corporate clients with extended procurement timelines, we can discuss adjusted deposit structures — speak to us at the proposal stage and we will do our best to work within your payment processes.
